The HLR crest

The crest of the HLR includes two pictures. The top one is from the seal of the Stockton & Darlington Railway (below left), which was originally responsible for building the Haggerleases (or Butterknowle) branch. (Note that, at the beginning, there was no thought of steam traction!) The lower image comprises part of the crest of the South Durham & Lancashire Union Railway (below right), which eventually incorporated part of the branch.
